The Cadillac SRX crossover vehicle is a genuine all-rounder, combining the advantages of two vehicle classes. It combines the sporty exterior, driving dynamics and on-road safety of a luxury station wagon, with the off-road abilities and interior space of a sport utility vehicle. The stylish five-door SRX also incorporates classic Cadillac features such as an unmistakable form vocabulary, sophisticated technology and an array of luxury features.
Built on the same platform as the Cadillac CTS, it incorporates exterior design cues from Cadillac's dynamic luxury sedan. The strong family resemblance includes striking vertical headlights, the bold contours of the front side sections and a V-shaped front that tapers into the classic Cadillac grille with mesh cover and prominent wreath and crest logo.
The Cadillac SRX is the division's first-ever luxury crossover vehicle and its introduction positions Cadillac competing in a new segment for the company. The SRX name is consistent with this. The first letter denotes the series. The second and the third letters stand for "reconfigurable" and "crossover". As the latest model to express Cadillac's bold new design form vocabulary; SRX echoes the crisp, creased look of its 2001 concept vehicle predecessor, Vizón, as well as anticipating and sharing automotive DNA with future vehicles.
At 2.96 meters, the Cadillac SRX has one of the longest wheelbases in its class, providing an exceptional amount of rear legroom. Usually, the SRX is a five-seater with a spacious cargo area. The rear seats can also be asymmetrically split and folded down, increasing the cargo volume to over 1968 liters.
In five-seat form, SRX can also offer an optional cargo system behind the second row of seats. Three large compartments integrated into the floor can accommodate a wide range of objects and are equipped with an easily removable receptacle. A cargo shade and cargo net always ensure a tidy appearance at the back. A third row of seats can also be ordered, enabling up to seven people to enjoy the luxurious interior. In order that the luggage area can still be used, the third row can be power-folded into the floor at the touch of a button.
"Ultra View" brightens your day
"Ultra View" is the name of an additional innovative feature on the Cadillac SRX options list. A huge, electrically operated, glass sliding roof gives those in the first two rows the thrill of an open-air driving experience. To ensure that passengers in the optional third row can also enjoy a light-flooded interior, an extra glass roof is available for the back with the "Ultra View Plus" option. The view from the Cadillac SRX is special, not just because of the glass roof. The seats are arranged theater-style - with the second row five centimeters higher than the front, and passengers in the third row a further twelve centimeters higher than the driver. This seating configuration gives Cadillac SRX occupants a better view of their environment than in conventionally designed cars.
Engines
SRX offers the choice of two engines, a 3.6 liter V-6 VVT and the 4.6 liter Northstar V-8 VVT unit, the SRX marking the first all wheel-drive application of the Northstar engine family. The 4.6 liter, 32-valve V-8 Northstar engine, mounted longitudinally, is generating 239 kW (325 hp) at 6500 rpm and 427 Nm of torque at 4400 rpm. The engine incorporates a host of technical innovations, including electronic throttle control and phasers on all four camshafts to control valve timing throughout the entire operating range. The 3.6-liter V-6 VVT develops 190 kW (258 hp) at 6500 rpm and 339 Nm of torque at 2800 rpm. The 60-degree dual overhead cam (DOHC), 24-valve powerplant boasts electronic throttle control, variable valve timing, multi-port fuel injection, two-stage roller chain cam drive, aluminium block and cylinder heads and a forged steel crankshaft.
Both engines are mated to five-speed automatic transmissions; the 5L50-E with the V-8 VVT and the 5L40-E with the V-6 VVT. The 5L50-E, with 25 percent more torque capacity than the 5L40-E, features Performance Algorithm Shifting (PAS), an innovative new dual-plate torque converter and a separate, highly refined transmission control module (TCM) with expanded power and memory. Both transmissions feature Driver Shift Control, which offers clutchless manual shifting, electronically controlled engine braking and downgrade detection with brake assist.
Excellent driving dynamics
Based on GM's acclaimed Sigma architecture, SRX is designed to deliver excellent driving dynamics. A near 50-50 weight distribution, a low center of gravity, the outstanding powertrain combination, independent wheel suspension and a host of vehicle stability technologies all contribute to making SRX a luxury crossover vehicle that is, at its core, fun to drive.
The Cadillac SRX comes with full-time all-wheel drive. Under normal driving conditions, the system splits the torque 50/50 to the front and rear axles via an open center differential. In the event of slippage, the torque is redirected to those wheels (or to the one particular wheel) with better traction. Factory-fitted StabiliTrak stability control, TCS traction control, four-channel ABS with Panic Brake Assist and speed sensitive variable effort steering provide a high level of active safety, while six airbags and front seatbelt pretensioners also ensure superior passive safety.
SRX incorporates all-aluminium suspension components to reduce unsprung mass and optimize performance. The SRX uses an independent short/long arm (SLA) front suspension and fully independent multi-link rear suspension, matched to the sophisticated chassis management and vehicle control systems, which include the latest four-channel StabiliTrak stability control and a segment-first Magnetic Ride Control (Sport Luxury).
New features for the 2006 Cadillac SRX include standard power rear liftgate and - for V8 models only - chrome accented roof rails.
The SRX is being built alongside its CTS, CTS-V and STS stable mates at GM's state-of-the art Lansing Grand River assembly center in Michigan. The facility recently received a J.D Power Gold Plant Award and was ranked the best assembly plant in North and South America in the 2004 J.D Power Initial Quality Study, in which Cadillac was voted number one amongst the toughest global luxury competition.
